The Sand Worm

Some of the students in our class wrote stories for the Lucky Book Club Short Story Competition. This is Jack B.'s entry.
One day I was doing my homework in my room when a gigantic sand worm smashed through my floor. It ate my homework and went back through the hole with the dirt covering the hole behind it. When I tried to tell my mum and dad but they didn’t believe me.

That night in my bed I heard my parents screaming. I fled to their room. I jumped back when I opened the door. The sand worm was back! This time it took the roof off the house and went back down the hole.
My mum and dad quickly went to the police. Mum shouted, “A sand-worm smashed through my floor!”

The policeman looked shocked and said, “Well, o.k. We’ll find the sand-worm in the morning. It’s too dark now.” But... at that moment the building came down and the sand-worm’s head popped up. The sand-worm was back.
Everyone screamed and ran away. But one man wasn’t scared. He ran up to the sand-worm with something in his hand. I couldn’t tell what it was. He put the thing on. “It’s a baby!” he shouted.

Police started saying, “It’s lost.” I thought if I can just get the people to help me chase it back to the desert. I ran back to the police and said, “If we can chase the sand worm away with something big it might go away.”

So they looked and looked. “I found something!” shouted a voice. It was a little boy who had heard the conversation. He had found out in a book that sand-worms are afraid of bulldogs. So the police got one. They found a big hole that the sand-worm had left but just at that moment the sand-worm jumped up! As soon as the sand-worm saw the bull dog it jumped back through the concrete and was never to be seen again.
