It was Rees' last day on Friday. Liam spent a lot of time making Rees a card. He drew lots of pictures of Rees' friends and things he likes, like Captain Underpants. All of the kids in the class signed it, and added their own pictures. Liam and Kate said goodbye speeches, and we watched "The Secret of Nimh," even though we hadn't quite finished reading the book.

Rees
It's Rees' last day at Raumati South School tomorrow. Rees is moving to Australia with his family. We are very sad that he is leaving, but happy for him because we know that he will make lots of new friends. Rees might comment on things we put on our blog if we're lucky. He'll be able to look at our blog when he's in Australia.

Our Garden
Jordan and Jacob did some work in our class garden today. They did some weeding and planted some pok choi, spinach and coriander seedlings. Jordan and Mrs Turner took some photos while they were gardening.
Road Safety
We had our first session with Constable Amanda today. Constable Amanda is a Police Education Officer who is teaching us about road safety. Today we talked about how often and how far we travel every week. We worked out that we travel more than we did when we were younger. Constable Amanda showed us how to make a travel map showing: where we travel; the distance we travel and the number of times we make each trip in a week.

What's The Time Mr. Wolf - Southside of Bombay (Real Video Clip)
We're still enjoying NZ Music Month in our class. Today we read the lyrics and sang along to two of the songs we listened to last week. This is the video for one of the songs...
Basic Facts
Yesterday we looked at the Woodlands School website and had a go at the Magnetic Fun activity as part of our Numeracy Warm-up. The Mammoths tried out the mixed facts activity and some of the timed tests. Ms Leishman added the link to the site to the Multiplication And Division page of our blog. We've also been practising skip-counting in 2, 5, 10s and 3s.

The Teacher and the Ghost by Daniella
The Teacher and The Ghost
Once upon a time there lived a teacher. She was teaching her class and then a ghost came in. All her class were screaming arrrrrr! The teacher said, “Calm down class.” Then a brave girl called Megan got a box and trapped the ghost in it. The ghost strangled every one. You’ll never see them again. Just remember that the ghost might come back for you.
The end
Room 8 Rocks!
Room 8 are the new holders of the Tawa Trophy. Yesterday we challenged Room 9 to a game of basketball tag, and won. We worked hard on strategies and skills before the game. Our efforts paid off. Mr McQueen says that Room 6 are going to challenge us for the trophy. We don't think they'll be able to win it off us.

Featured Authors
We've added a new page to our blog, so that we can include more of the stories written by the talented authors in our class. The stories featured on our writing page will change, so make sure you check our blog regularly. The first story to be added is, "Flame" by Lucy. It's an adventure story about a family of wolves who outwit the evil, Holly Tail. Click on the, Our Writing tab under our class photo to read the story.
Here's an extract from Lucy's story...
Just then, the guards stepped aside and the horrible body of Holly Tail entered their prison cave. Flame closed his eyes. Bear trembled. Flame had heard rumours that whoever looked at Holly would be killed at first glance and Bear-well she was just plain scared! Holly growled deep down from her throat. Then she spoke. “Who dares to cross to my territory you dirty trespassers! Tell me your name! NOW!” She barked this last word so loud all four of the foxes jumped a mile!

Kapahaka
We do kapahaka every Tuesday with Matiu. We're getting really good at our haka and the Michael Jackson song. Today the boys we're practicing showing their "haka faces".
Lots of the boys watch Tamatea. He's a good leader. He knows what to do and he does the actions with pride.
Today Newa and Wai went on stage to help Matiu.

New Zealand Music Month 2010
Clav Dub by Rhombus
May is New Zealand Music Month. Every day in May our class is listening to a different song recorded by New Zealand musicians. So far we have listened to songs by Rhombus, The Exponents and O.M.C. We listen to the songs two times. The first time through we concentrate on just listening. We record our thoughts about the songs in words and pictures in our NZ Music Month books.
Rhombus are a Wellington band. The video for this song was filmed in Wellington. How many buildings and landmarks can you identify?

Steve Spangler on The Ellen Show April 2010
Aaron saw this video on Steve Spangler's blog (see the link in the list of blogs we're reading). We watched it today. It's amazing! He uses water, rubbing alcohol and a bike pump to simulate how clouds are formed. Keep watching to see what happens to the ping pong balls.
Muffins
On Tuesday Emily, Regan, Jack B. and Jessie helped Mrs Turner bake muffins.
They picked spinach from our tyre garden and silver-beet from the school garden.

Cinderella
We have been doing lots of narrative writing in our class. This is Jessie's latest story.
Cinderella
Once there was a girl Cinderella. She had beautiful golden hair. Cinderella had to live with her stepmother and her stepsister. They were ugly. What she did was never good enough. The stepsisters were going to the ball. And soon the night of the ball came.
